Holiday Information about North West of Scotland
Why not rent an old cottage on of the West Coast in one of the coastal villages. You could explore the road to the isles that run from Fort William, the home of Ben Nevis, with its Skiing and more active pastimes. There are many cottage holiday options in this area. If you like coastal routes you can travel up through to Ullapool to find sandy beaches.
If you don't like crowds then this is the place for a secluded holiday cottage or self catering accommodation. Sparsely populated you'll find no shortage of peace and tranquillity. See if you can find Britain's most remote pub.
Along the West Coast you'll find no shortage of breathtaking views and stunning scenery from sea lochs to the most impressive mountain ranges in the world. As you travel north passing sandy beaches with blue seas you will reach the seldom visited north coast. Starting with Cape Wrath, this can not be accessed by road and requires the use of a passenger ferry and a short walk.
The North coastline offers sandy bays and steep cliffs. Along this coastline you'll find Cape Hope over 3000ft high. Travelling east you'll find some small inviting villages with spectacular countryside with lots of cottages to rent. From Tongue to Thurso you'll find more stunning scenery on the newly improved road system. Thurso is one of the largest towns on the north coast offering a place for supplies for those hiring self catering cottages.
Ferries are available from Thurso to the Shetland isles and beyond. Further along the north coast you'll come to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of mainland Britain, and Dunnet bay regarded as a haven for surfers. John O'Groats, commonly misconceived as the most northerly point, but is the regarded as the furthest point and well publicised for trips and endurance from Lands end. The castle of Mey is the most northerly castle in the UK and home to the late Queen Mother. After John O'Groats if you head south down the east coast you'll find lots of rural cottages to rent. Wick is an historical town on the east coast, originally a Viking settlement and was originally called Vik meaning 'Bay'.
No trip to the North West would be complete without a trip to the Isle of Skye. This can be reached by rail or road.
