Holiday Information about South East of Scotland
Edinburgh, Scotland's capital is rich with history. With its impressive castle looking over the city which is split in to the New town and the Old Town which has small alleys and gives the appearance of a medieval town which has inspired many films over the years and the New town designed in the eighteenth century with its wider streets. Staying in a holiday cottage rental or a self catering apartment will allow you to explore this historic city and surrounding areas. No trip to Scotland would be complete without a visit to the Edinburgh festival in August and early September.
East Lothian is considered an affluent part of this region, with its large estates and farms. There are many cottages in this area and is easily commutable from Edinburgh. Here you will find the National museum of flight and the Scottish sea bird centre. West Lothian is by many considered the opposite to the East and hosts its own wonderful ruined castles and a great place to rent a holiday cottage.
Further south of Edinburgh is the county of Midlothian, which is quite hilly and very rural with the odd mining village. This area is known for the chapel at Roslin featured in the film, the Da Vinci Code. North West of Edinburgh is the South Queensferry which is a small town with narrow cobbled streets which is also home to the Forth bridges.
South of Edinburgh and before the English border are known as The Borders. This land is rich with history as many battles have taken place here over the centuries. You'll find the country side strewn with old castles and ruined abbeys amongst the heather covered hills and deep valleys. Here you will find many tourist roads that allow you to take in the natural beauty of this landscape which gets wilder to the west making it an ideal place to rent a holiday cottage or self catering apartment.
