The Orkney Isles is a collection of islands to the north west of the British mainland and a short trip from John O'Groats. One of Europe's best preserved Stone Age settlements can be found in Skara Brea on the mainland which is over 4000 years old.
The mainland is made up of two main settlements, Stromness which is an old fishing village and Kirkwall the capital. The is an ideal place to stay in a holiday a cottage. The island of Hoy is the next largest island south of the mainland with its dramatic landscape. Northeast of Kirkwall is Shapinsay which hosts the Balfour Castle which is now a hotel and guided tours are available and a great place to rent a cottage.
