One of the most famous archaeological remains is the Mousa Broch from the Iron Age. The capital of the island's is Lerwick, a busy port town. The most southerly point of the mainland of the Shetlands Isles is Sumburgh Head is the remote island called the Fair Isle, a thriving community with lots of holiday cottages and known for its knitwear and wildlife mainly birds.

North of the mainland are three sparsely populated islands a great place to rent a rural cottage, the most northerly place being Unst after which there is nothing until you reach the North poll. The Island of Papa Stour, to the west of the mainland has some spectacular caves; further west still is the remote isle of Foula known for its cliffs.
